Welcome to 4th Grade!

Welcome to 4th Grade!  My name is Jennifer Westbrook and this is my second year teaching fourth grade at Chalker. I am looking forward to a positive and productive year.  Please check back every couple of weeks for new information.

The Last Nine Weeks!

It's hard to believe we are in the final semester of Fourth Grade and soon the students will be Fifth Graders!  The year has flown by!

Thank you for all of the flowers, school supplies, and other gifts that were sent in for Teacher Appreciation Week.  I loved everything!

We will be doing an Author Study (Patricia Polacco) this grading period and we will work on Persuasive Writing.  We will also be reviewing for the CRCT.  Please continue to work on the  homework tests until after the CRCT.  This will greatly help your child prepare for the actual test.  We are working on Ecosystems in Science and Westward Expansion in Social Studies.  In Math we will study multiplying and dividing decimals, geometry and graphs.  Please continue to review papers that come home and practice simple multiplication and division facts as needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and thanks for all you do!

February 2009

This month has flown by!  We enjoyed our Valentine's Day Sharing and Caring on the 14th.  We are only a couple of weeks away from the last grading period of 4th grade and we are very busy working on CRCT benchmarks and skills.

We are learning about planets in Science and studying The New Nation in Social Studies. There will be a Social Studies Test on February 27. We will continue to work on Informational Text and Writing until the end of the grading period and in Math we are beginning decimals.

There will be a "How To Project" that will count as the March book report.  Most of the work will be done at school.  We are going to work on a How To slide show in Photo Story 3.  More information will come out about this project next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and thanks for all you do!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a fun-filled holiday break.  We have a lot of exciting things to learn about the second half of the school year.

This semester we will be learning about Informational Text in Language Arts.  We will begin fractions and decimals in Math.  Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts with your child.  In Social Studies we will be learning about the events leading to the Revolutionary War.  In Science we will study the solar system, planets, stars, constellations, etc.  Also, continue to check your child's agenda for current homework assignments.

Just a reminder...the January book report is due on the 28th.  Assignment directions were given out today, 1/06/09.  There is also a Field Trip form coming home today.  Look for a green sheet of paper with an envelope attached.  Please return it as soon as possible.

Thanks for all you do to have your child prepared for school and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving!  When we come back to school we will continue to work on Traditional Literature and Responding to Literature.  We will work on language conventions throughout the year.  In Science we will be working on Sound and in Social Studies we will continue to work on Colonization.  Please continue to practice the multiplication facts and long division.  We are now reviewing those skills and learning Geometry.

I hope to see everyone at the December P.T.A. Performance of "The North Pole Star" starring the fourth grade!

October 29, 2008

It's hard to believe November is next week.  Please remember that the book reports are due on Monday, November 3, 2008 and that the students do not have school next Tuesday for Election Day.

We are running low on notebook paper.  If possible, please send some in with your child.

We are working on Simple Machines in Science for the next couple of weeks.  In Social Studies we are working on Colonization.  Language Arts is still Traditional Literature and Responding to Literature.  In Math we are learning three digit by two digit multiplication and we are starting division.  Please continue to practice the facts each day.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and thanks for all you do with your child to help them be prepared for school!

October 10, 2008

It's hard to believe that the first nine weeks are already over.  The year is flying by!  Please look for report cards in the Friday Folders on October 17.  Also, the Fall Festival is quickly approaching.  Look for information on this soon from the class room mothers.

We will be studying Forces and Motion in Science for the next three weeks or so.  We will explore these concepts with cars and roller coasters.  There will also be an Egg Drop assignment coming home soon.  Simple Machines will be explored the last week of this unit.

In Language Arts we will work on English Conventions, Responding to Literature, and Traditional Literature: tall tales, fables, and folk tales.  In Math we will continue with multiplication and division.  Please practice the basic facts with your child.

Fire Safety will continue on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the next two weeks.  We will get to see a fire truck and all of the equipment on the final Thursday of the program.  Health will cover medicines and drugs.  It's going to be another busy nine weeks.

Thanks for all you do at home to see that your child is prepared for school each day!!!

We will be planting the windowbox outside of the computer lab this week.  Please be sure to send in pansies if you are going to participate.  We will plant the flowers on Thursday.

This week in math we will start data collection, multiplication and division.  We will also learn the properties of multiplication.  Please continue to practice the facts with your child.

We are still learning about narratives in writing and how to make them really interesting.  We are learning many comprehension strategies in reading and carrying these over to science and social studies.  We stay very busy!

Please let me know if you have any ideas for the class basket for the Fall Festival.  Have a great week!

September 10, 2008

I hope everyone has had a good week so far!  We are still working on the same skills we were working on last week and making progress with the standards.  Please review place value to the millions, rounding, and comparing numbers with your child.  Also, please make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes each night.

Check out this COOL website!  www.spellingcity.com   I will put the spelling words on this website each week so the students can practice throughout the week.

We are going to plant a windowbox this year even though we don't have a window in our room.  We will be planting the area outside of the computer lab across the hall from our room.  Please send in pansies or daffodil bulbs on September 25th if you would like to contribute to this project. We will actually be planting the flowers and the bulbs that day.

The Room Parents and I were talking at Open House about the class basket we will put together for the Fall Festival, which is just around the corner.  We would like ideas from any parents who have some thoughts as to what our theme for the basket could be.  If you have a special interest or craft or anything you would like us to consider for the basket's theme, please send me a note or an email.  Who knows, maybe someone out there has a Braves player for a relative (or works with/for the Braves) or a weekend retreat in the mountains or computer software or ...the possibilities are endless!!!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

September 3, 2008

Welcome back after a nice long weekend.  This week we are learning about weather and the water cycle in Science.  Ask your child to sing "The Water Cycle Boogie" for you.

In Social Studies there will be a test  over vocabulary terms on Friday, September 5, 2008.  Look for a blue sheet of paper.

We are studying graphs and comparing numbers in Math along with continuing practice in place values to the millions.  The Spelling words are review words from the past two weeks.  We are still working on simple/complete subjects and predicates in English and in Writing we are still working on paragraphs, elaboration and narrative writing. The Health continues to be traits, self-concept, and needs we all have.

Please e-mail or call me if you have any questions or concerns.  I hope to see all of you at Open House tomorrow night, September 4, 2008.
