Math

We have been working on reading and writing numbers in expanded form, standard form, and word form.  We will work on rounding numbers to nearest 10, 100, 1,000. It is important that students continue to study and review those basic math facts.

Science

We have been learning about the tools and skills that scientists use to gather information.  We ended the week with an activity involving aluminum foil barges and snap cubes to practice using the Scientific Method.  We will now begin our unit on water.

Math

We have been reading and writing numbers and studying place value.  We have also been working with data and graphing.  We will begin multiplication.  Please, please, please review those basic multiplication and division facts daily with your child.  We will be multiplying 2 and 3 digits by 2 digits and it is difficult to multiply large numbers if you haven't mastered those basic facts.

Here are some study tips:

flashcards are great; counting by each number and counting backwards (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 ... 30, 27, 24, 21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3); using playing cards to make problems; playing Yahtzee or using dice to make problems

Social Studies

We have been working on map skills and landforms of the United States.  We will soon begin our unit on Exploration and Explorers.  A research project will be included in this unit. Information about the project will be sent home in a few weeks.
