Great First Week!

We had an exciting first week.  The children had many opportunities to learn more about each other. They also created their own class rules, and we have been practicing our classroom procedures daily.

Thank you for promptly returning all of the paperwork sent home.  I know it is a lot to do.  I am planning on completing the class directory this week.  I will send it home by next Monday at the latest.

Reminders:

Please have your child return his/her signed Friday Folder each Monday.

Homework folders are due each Friday.

Parent Orientation for Pre-K through second grade will be on the evening of Thursday, August 31.  For those of you with older children, Parent Orientation for grades 3-5 will be on Thursday, September 7.  Your child does not need to come to this meeting.  The purpose is to inform you about the grade level curriculum.  Please attend if possible.

Curriculum Update:

Morning Work

There will be a short assessment on Morning Work this Friday.  All corrected work will be sent home on Thursday for review. 

Integrated Language Arts (SS, Science, Health)

Your child should be prepared to recite the poem this Friday.  We have practiced daily in class, and most of the students are very comfortable with it.

There will be a short vocabulary quiz this Friday on the words we have discussed in class. We have practiced and reviewed daily.

Math

We are beginning with a brief review of addition and subtraction strategies.  Please practice addition and subtraction facts at home.  We are doing timed tests several times a week.

Language Arts

We are beginning the Sitton Spelling program this week.  Also, we will be reviewing sentence structure, with a focus on beginning capitalization and end punctuation.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to an exciting new school year!  As many of you may know, this is Chalker's tenth year, and it will be full of celebration.  Look for weekly updates on our class blog.  I will send information on class and school events.

Class Information :

Integrated Unit

Our first integrated unit will be All about Me.  We will focus on personal responsibilility, the importance of following rules, the uniqueness of each individual, and acceptance of classmates.

Our first vocabulary test will be on Friday, August 25. In second grade, definitions to memorize are not sent home.  The words are sent home on Monday, and the test is on Friday. We cover the words extensively in class, so that the children actually understand the words and their usage.  Instead of looking up definitions in the dictionary, you may find it more beneficial to discuss what your child has learned about the words each day in class.

In addition, each child will be expected to recite the poem All about Me for the class on Friday, August 25. The purpose of this is to build memorization skills as well as speaking skills. Many people have a fear of public speaking. To overcome this we create a comfortable, supportive environment where students encourage each other.  Each child's effort is acknowledged.

Other Subject Areas:

This week, I will be assessing each student's needs in other subject areas to determine where each child needs to begin.

Reminders:

Homework folders are sent home on Monday, and they should be returned each Friday. This week have your child read nightly, and complete the paper bag assignment.

Each Friday, you will receive a Friday folder with a weekly behavior report, and a list of any incomplete assignments.  There will be a sheet for you to sign and return with the folder each Monday. You may keep your child's work that comes home in the folder.  Please do not throw away graded papers until the end of each grading period.  You will also receive other important information in this folder.
