Sight Words

I am going to try again to post the website for helping your child learn sight words.  Let me know if it is working for you.  http://www.cobbk12.org/sites/literacy/centers/1_ppt.htm

Hopefully you will be able to access this great site and use it as a type of "flash card" activity for your child to learn their sight words on the computer.

Poem of the Week

Here are some poems that we have been learning over the past month:

Johnny Appleseed

Thank you, Johnny Appleseed.

We owe you quite a lot,

for the apples that you planted

with a walking stick and cooking pot.

Your seeds were planted far and wide

across our frontier land.

A friendly word you had for all,

and you gave a helping hand.

Thank you, Johnny Appleseed.

We owe you quite a lot,

for lovely trees and apples

and the lessons that you taught.

A Pumpkin Dream

Pumpkins grow

on a long, long vine.

I dream the biggest

one is mine!

I roll it home

and say “Surprise!”

Now we will bake

some pumpkin pies.

Picking Apples

We ride on the wagon

and giggle at each bump.

Up to the orchard,

then out we jump.

We pick our apples

right off the tree.

Then put them in a bag,

one, two three!

We carry them home

and pile them high.

Maybe tomorrow we will

make an apple pie!

Remember, it is not that we are working on memorizing these poems, but rather working on our fluency and prosidy(rhythm).  Have fun and enjoy the poems.  Your child is collecting these as the weeks go by, and will have a full collection of them to bring home in May.

First Grade Sight Words

First Grade Sight Words   Use the link to find these words and do activities at home with your child to support their learning.  You will find the Pre-primer shown first, then move on to Primer, and then on to first grade.  Your child will need to know 200 sight words by the end of first grade.  This link provides a great way for you child to learn their sight words with a flashcard technique using the fascination of technology!  Have fun

New Friends

Please find the poem for the week of September 8th!  Encourage fluency and prosidy rather than memorization.  We want students to be reading with expression!  Download new_friend.doc

September Homework

We are beginning our fourth week of homework.  Some of it has gone well, yet some still needs fixing.  Please be aware that the DWL(Daily Written Language) packet needs to be done one page per week.  Some students were mistakenly doing one page each day!!  Also, it is extremely important that your child edit the sentences correctly using the guide on page one of the packet.  They must cross out the error, write the correction above it, and then re-write the corrected sentence beneath.

Please note that I grade their homework as explained in the initial letter you received in August.  Students receive a star for perfect work, a smilie face for good work, a straight face for average work, and a frown for unacceptable work.  As a parent, please go through their work with them and provide guidance and assistance.  We want all students to be earning stars and smilie faces.  If we have high expectations, we will get high results!

Thanks!  And please, don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Download Sept08.pub
