Georgia Regions Book Project

Remember that the Georgia Regions Book Projects are due on March 10, 2009.  These will greatly help your child further his/her understanding of our wonderful state.  I know it can be a bit confusing as to what the Georgia regions actually are as they are listed differently on different websites.  So, as far as our curriculum standards go, the Georgia regions are as follows: Mountains, Piedmont Plateau, Coastal Plains, Swamps/Marshes, and the Coast.  Here are a couple of great websites to assist you with the project:

Fun for the Whole Family

We are busy learning about rocks and minerals.  One great family trip to explore different rocks is Amicalola Falls and/or Dahlonega.  They are only about 1 1/2 hours from Kennesaw and offer lots of fun for the entire family.  Here are some websites to learn more:  http://ngeorgia.com/parks/amicalola.html

Science is FUN!!

The students have been learning about the Scientific Method and various words that scientists need to know before doing experiments.  Yesterday, we had a lot of fun doing an experiment with Mentos and Coke.  We used the Scientific Method throughout the experiment.  We learned that Coke and Diet Coke both bubble up and overflow when Mentos are added.

Now your child can be scientist at home!! For 10 extra credit points, you and your child can try different combinations to see what happens. For example, you can try different sodas with different types of mints (other than Mentos).  All you need to do is send in a note stating that you and your child tried it and sign the note.  I will let the students share their findings in class! Have fun!

Welcome to a NEW YEAR!

I am so excited to have a new group of wonderful students!

School is off to a great start!  The students are getting used to our new schedule (switching for math and Social Studies).  They are also getting used to our rules and routines.  Our classroom is based on Positive Discipline, which means that our class came together to make this year's class rules.  It also means that we will have weekly class meetings to give compliments, solve problems, and plan events.

I will send weekly emails to communicate, and will primarily use this blog to post helpful websites related to projects and other classwork.

Have a terrific day!  Mrs. Phillips
