5th Grade- SHARKS!

A copy this letter was sent home the week of January 19, 2009.  Please make sure that your child showed you the shark information letter:

The fourth and fifth grade Target classes will be completing a study of sharks for the remainder of the year. This is typically a high interest topic for the students.   A major component of this unit is the dissection of the Dogfish shark.  In order for a student to dissect, they must show understanding of the shark and its body.  The students will be given three different tests on the shark and they must get a 90% or better on each test to be able to complete the dissection activity.   We want students and parents to be aware of the expectations for this unit, so we would like for each parent and child to sign the permission sheet to relay that you are all aware of the expectations and dates of the various tests.  The students will be given study sheets to help them study for the test.

In addition, if you would not like for your child to participate in dissection, please let us know.  They will still be required to take the tests.  However, on the day of dissection, they will be provided with an alternative activity to complete at Chalker.  We will be completing the dissection at

Lassiter

High School

.   As soon as we know the date for dissection, we will send home a permission slip.  We will need some parent help for this trip, so if you are interested in helping, please let us know.

Thank you for your help and support.  Let us know if you have any questions.

I have scheduled our first River walk for Oct. 30.  Please send in boots by this day.  Also, I sent home a permission slip this week for the walks. Please send it back ASAP.
Let me know if you have any questions about the walks.  See you all soon.

5th Grade- LAW NEWS

It is hard to believe that we have already been in school for nine weeks.  I have enjoyed working with all of your children.
Here are a few reminders about upcoming events.
1.  We have a field trip on Tuesday.  Please send a sack lunch unless your child plans on buying a school sack lunch.  Sodas will be provided on the trip, so you do not need to send a drink. We will leave around 9:00 and return by 2:00.
2.  Law Projects are DUE October 28, 2008.  I would love for the students to have an audience as they present, so please plan on coming  to the presentations.  We will start around 8:30 and hopefully finish by 9:30 or so.  Please make sure your child is prepared on presentation day.

Welcome Back

I hope everyone had a great holiday break.  I am excited that the students are back in class.  I also want to welcome all the new students to Target.  I hope everyone is ready to get back into their "Target" frame of mind.  The units for this semester will be very exciting!

1st grade: First grade will be working on a unit called Stepping into Target.  This unit will introduce them to skills that they will use throughout their years in the Target program.  Some of the topics we will cover will be Bloom's Taxonomy, Multiple Intelligences, Brainstorming, and creative thinking.

4th and 5th Grade:  These grade levels will be working on a study of The Middle Ages.  This is a fabulous unit.  The students usually seem to show high interest in this unit.  We will cover the history of this time period as well as the people.  Be on the look out for an at home project.

CLASSROOM WISH LIST:  If you are able to donate any of the following items, it would be most appreciated!

Pretzels for when students forget their snack

Glue sticks

Any books of the Middle Ages

Puppets of the Middle Ages (seen at Learning Express)

Any of the following books for the first grade unit:

Salmon Princess by Mindy Dwyer, The Korean Princess  and The Egyptian Princess (both by Shirley Climo.

As always, I encourage all students to complete a Going Beyond assignment.  This should be something that the student generated on their own and is interesting to the student.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

CONFERENCES  Please let me know if you would like to see me during conference week.  I will be happy to schedule a time if you need to meet about your child.

Thank you so much for all of your help.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Ultimate Connection (Bridges) Unit Assessment

Please make sure your child is starting to study for the unit test.  The test will be the week of November 12.  Your child should begin to study the materials in the unit section of their notebook.  Please do not let your child wait until the last minute to study for this test.  Thanks for your support!
