Week 3

spelling review: syllables ( test on Thursday)

Health review: chapter 1 lesson 3-4- the focus will be on learning about how to recognize and handle your emotions.

Social Studies: We will finish our study of the Constitution.  The students will have a test on Friday. 

Math: We will focus our study on rounding whole numbers and decimals and on adding and subtracting complex numbers. (chapter 2)

** There will be a DOL test weekly

Grammar: The focus Will be on "learning how to use the dictionary and the thesaurus."

Afterwards, the students will learn about nouns.

Writing: the students will continue to learn about expository writing.  Their first piece will be about their favorite food.  The students will begin a flow map to organize their ideas.

Multiplication tests will be given periodically ( please study your facts!!!)

2nd week assignments

Class overview:

Math- Place value with whole numbers and with decimals.  Students will identify the digits in a number according to place value.  The students will also compare and order whole numbers and decimals.

Quiz on lessons 1.1-1.4 (Friday) Identifying place value and ordering and comparing whole numbers and decimals.

Reading-We are reviewing the structure of guided reading.  The students are also learning how to identify non fiction and informational text.

Writing- The students are learning about expository writing.  This style of writing often explains "why" or "how to do something."  The students will first write about why they enjoy their favorite food.  Afterwards, they will create an "expert book" in class. 

Grammar- The students are doing a great job identifying sentence types.  We are also learning about subjects and predicates.  The students will have a quiz on this material Friday.

Spelling- Short vowel sounds (test on Friday)

Social Studies- The students are learning about the creation of the Constitution and of the government structure that we have today.

Welcome to the fifth grade!!!

Welcome!

I am enjoying the first week of school. I have an awesome group of students.  They are fun, energetic, and most of all very intelligent.

For the first week the students will practice bonding with each other.  So far we have focused on activities that teach students how to communicate effectively, and they are having a blast!

The first week is vital for the students because it sets the tone for the rest of the school year.  This time and these activities provide a strong foundation for the students' performance in the fifth grade. 

It is a critical year for fifth graders, their last year in elementary school.  Therefore, by reinforcing the importance of responsibility students will be prepared to handle the vigorous demands in middle school. 

For this week:

The students should review the rules and their multiplication facts this week.  We will have a quiz on these items.
