Week 26

Dear Parents,

Winter is almost over.  (I was hoping for a snow day so the kids could experience a little fun wintry weather--oh, well.  Maybe next year.)

Some questions to ask your child:

• What is living?  What is nonliving?

• Does cake have a short "a" sound or a long "a" sound?

• What can you remember about George Washington?  Abraham Lincoln?

• We trade money for goods and services.  What are goods?  What are services?

• How do you count by fives?  By twos?

We are hoping that each family can donate one package of baby wipes to get us through the rest of the year.  Thanks.

Coming up:

Early Release:  Tues, March 3 the students are released at 12:20.

Soon breakfast will be available for Chalker students.  We will send more information later, but here are some facts:

Breakfast will be available in Chalker's cafeteria after spring break.  If your child is on the free lunch program, breakfast will be no charge.  If your child is on reduced lunch then he will be charged 30 cents.  I don't know the full cost for other children.  If you have questions you can call our lunchroom manager, Sharon Rhodes at 678-494-7622.

Cherry Blossom Recipe

Spring is on its way.  We celebrated with some yummy Cherry Blossom Popcorn:

Pop two bags of popcorn.  Put in large bowl.

Stir together and boil for two minutes

• 1 stick melted butter, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup corn syrup.

After boiling, add 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2 Tablespoons cherry flavored Jell-o powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda.  Stir.  Pour over popcorn and stir to coat.  Pour onto baking pan and bake ate 250 degrees for 15 minutes.  Stir and bake for 15 minutes more.  Empty onto clean tray or bowl to cool.

For those of you interested in a free Six Flags ticket for your child for next summer, the reading logs are due on Friday. (This log, which was sent home in Dec, requires just six hours of reading with your child.  What a deal!)

Also, we have scheduled a fieldtrip to the zoo!  For those parents who can come, please set aside Thursday, April 16.  We will be sending home more information later.

Important questions to discuss with your child:

What is a hero?

What does the clock look like when it's 2 o'clock?

What are the short vowel sounds?
