Mrs. Fudge's Kindergarten Class

Fall!

We have completed 7 weeks of school.  Here are some questions you can ask your child.  They will help you understand what we have been learning at school.:

• Is it the first day of school?
• Why do we need to know numbers?
• How do we count?
• Why do we write?
• How do patterns help us learn?
• Is it summer?

We will be using "black marble" composition books.  Please send one in with your child.  You can find these at Walmart or an office supply store.  (Not all kindergarten classes use these so they were not listed on the supply list this summer.)

Early Release

Dear Parents,

        Next Tuesday will be our first "early release day".  Your child will be dismissed at 12:30.  (We will eat lunch an hour earlier than usual.)  Make sure to check your schedules to accommodate this change. 

Also coming up: 

• Sept 25   Individual pictures of each student will be taken for purchase and for the school's yearbook.
• Sept 26   Wear yellow, green or a Chalker shirt.  It's school spirit day!                

   

Here are some suggestions for reading a new book together with your child:

1.     Before you begin to read, do a “book walk”.  Look through the pages together and discuss the pictures.  Try to predict what the book might be about.

2.     Read the book.  Do whatever feels most comfortable.  You may read to your child while you point to the words.  You may read together while you or your child points to the words, or your child may read to you.

3.     Read the book a second time.  See if you can notice something new, or use this reading time to see how many things you can remember from the book.  This time your child may attempt to read alone.

4.     When you read a new book with your child, choose one of these strategies to work on:

·        Ask questions:  What does this story remind you of? Who did that?  What was the problem?  How did they feel?

·        Look for special words or letters that repeat.

·        Identify the characters and setting of the story.

·        Discuss whether or not you liked the story.  What was your favorite part?

·        See how many details you can remember when you retell the story.

Day 19

Fridays are always fun.

Your child will be coming home with a "recipe" for rice pudding.  We used our skills as mathematicians, scientists, and writers in a cooking lab today.  They watched, tasted, smelled and touched as I mixed up the ingredients.  Then they used their emerging writing skills to help them remember what we did.  It should be fun to listen to their description of our activities.  Most of them tried it after it had baked.  If I had just set the pudding in front of them without the experience of watching, smelling, and tasting, none of them would have tried it!

Day 17

Dear Parents,

It was good to see many of you at our Open House.  Kindergarten is a wonderful time of life.

You may have noticed that inside the back cover of our communication folder that goes home each night is a set of reading logs.  Since it is September, you may start recording a list of books you read with your child.  This can include books brought home from school, books at home, and even occasionally a magazine or catalog. Please keep the reading logs in the folder.  At the end of each month we'll send home a coupon towards a Pizza Hut pizza, or Stevie B's.

Here are some more questions you can ask your child:

• What are some things you can sort? 
• What is a period?
• Tell something that begins with Ll, or Mm, or Jj.
