Science Dates Update

The date for the first deadline is fast approaching for the animal research project.  Farina's homeroom will submit their written and visual portions this Friday, March 13 while Ms. LIttlejohn's homeroom will submit thiers on March 17th.  Farina's homeroom will submit the workbook pages assigned for the study guide on March 16th, the day of the chapter unit test while Ms. Littlejohn's class will submit their workbook pages and take the test on March 19th. Hopeflly this will clear up what is due when.

One modification to the rubric to note: The periodical (journal, magazine, newspaper) source is no longer required as one of the sources.  Due to limited number of periodicals in our media center and the difficulty to go to a library and find one a 5th grader can understand is too burdensome, so an additional electronic or book source may be substituted in its place! Hooray!

Tips on presentations:

Don't overdo the text on the powerpoints or posters!! Save the text for the paper portion and use the great graphics and pictures on the posters! titles and headlines are fine just no paragraphs and definitions-UGH!

Yes! students may use notecards while giving their oral presentations. NO, they can't just read their papers aloud-boring!

Hope this helps.

Tips for paper reduction

Due to the recent paper shortage, we have some options for those asking for practice CRCT sheets to be sent home:

  • Use the online site handed out at parent conferences for at home practice
  • Purchase a CRCT practice book at the Schoolbox for at home practice
  • Provide a pack of paper for paper worksheets to be sent home

These options should allow us to conserve the remaining paper stock we have to last us for the remainder of the year.  Your resourcefulness is appreciated.

Immigration Day HUGE Success!

Thank you to everyone who participated in Immigration Day. The students were quite realistic looking in their shawls and caps.  Many teachers and volunteers made the experience quite realistic for the students and many said they now feel more appreciaton toward those ancestors who may have struggled in order to give them the life they live today.

Next up will be Pi Day and since 3.14 ison a Saturday this year, we will celebrate during math class on March 13.  But the concept will remain mathmatically the same (3.14)=Pi. If you would like to donate a pie for the celebration, we are looking for frozen, no baking required types that come in the frozen section of the grocery. Think Lemon icebox, chocolate mousse, key lime etc... 4 pies should cover the entire class. I will bring a cutter and paper products as well.

Math chapter 17 test was postponeduntil tomorrow due to time running out today.  Most of the students are doing rather well this chapter and have actually started saying they like fractions now! I look for everyone to do well on this test.   Likewise, the Health test and classification quiz will also be tomorrow. Study those strips and the vocabulary from the illegal drug chapter.

Good Luck!

Progress Reports Home FRIDAY

Please be on the lookout for the 41/2 week progress report in this week's Friday folders.  Also a current A/R report is included.  These will give you and your student an idea of where grades stand so far this nine weeks.  Most students are showing strong progress especially in math and homework completion.  This is a sign that the students are maturing and taking more responsibility for their learning and it is showing in their grades! Late or missing work may cause some students' grades to suffer, but there is still 4 1/2 more weeks to get their grades where they want them before report cards are sent.  Keep up the assistance at home to ensure they are getting a consistent message.  Happy Valentine's Day to all my sweet students.  Celebrate your student's success with their favorite ice cream sundae this weekend.  They have earned it.
