We have been working hard last week and this week focusing on remembering school rules and making our own class rules. Our children have decided on 3 rules:
1. Always respect ourselves.
2. Always respect our teacher.
3. Always respect our classmates and others.
4. We will help each other learn.
We feel these rules cover just about everything! We have a great looking class and everyone is eager to learn all that our 2nd grade has to offer and even more.
Please remember that we have snack each afternoon and that each child is welcome to bring a drink and a nutritious snack from home. Also, it is a very good idea for everyone to have a jacket or light sweater/sweatshirt to keep at school due to changing temperatures throughout the building. Our AC has been working very well through this HEAT WAVE!
OPEN HOUSE will be held on September 4th from 7:00-8:00 in our classroom. Please arrange to have a babysitter for any siblings as this time flies and you wouldn't want to be distracted. I do understand that some parents may have to split their time between teachers/classrooms as you have other children. I will have all information typed and available for you just for this reason. I hope to see everyone there and am looking forward to it!
HOMEWORK:
We will discuss homework at length during Open House and I have not been very particular about it so far. We do have spelling words every week through our Sitton Spelling curriculum. Students are given a pre-test on 5 words each week. If students miss one word, or get them all correct on the pre-test, then they are given 5 challenge words to work on in addition to the 5 words they already know how to spell. This helps the students advance more quickly and learn more words to add to their writing vocabulary. In the case that students would miss more than one word, they are only responsible for learning the first 5 words on the pre-test paper. Please watch for the Word Preview paper each Monday - these will be their spelling words for the week and if they have challenge words, they will be stapled to the Word Preview. The Spelling test will be given each Friday.
Please do not confuse Vocabulary Words with Spelling. The (usually 8) Vocabulary words will pertain to whatever we are learning at school and the students learn the definitions of these words when they are introduced at the beginning of the week. Students are only required to recognize these words and know what they mean. We will have a Vocabulary test on these words at the end of most weeks and I will read it to them.
Some of our other homework will be for Spelling word and Vocabulary word practice, in addition to Language Arts and Math. There will be homework Monday through Thursday. All homework will be due the next day. I do not assign homework over weekends unless there is a special project.
ITEMS FOR DONATION:
Playground toys, extra snacks (pretzels, crackers, etc.)
I hope to see all of you at OPEN HOUSE and look forward to another wonderful year at Chalker!
