THANK YOU all very much for attending your conference last week. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns as you look through all the information that was sent home at that time. Remember that you may begin practice tests for the CRCT whenever you are ready, although I feel that it is a little early yet to begin this. Just don't lose your child's login information on the green sheet!
We have another Early Release Day this Wednesday, February 4th. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 and teachers will be in a Professional Development meeting the rest of the day. Please remember to send a note if your child's transportation will change that day.
I will be sending home another report on each child's Accelerated Reader points. Please check this over and make sure that the tests are being passed and the book levels are appropriate for your child's reading skills. Students need 10 points to have their picture on the Wall of Fame. Please encourage your child to read AR books as it improves comprehension, vocabulary and self-esteem. AR books and tests will also increase the SRI test score.
We are working on counting back change. We began with $.50, then $1.00 and are moving on to $5.00. Students can subtract amounts, but also need to know how to "count on" from the amount spent, up to the $5.00 amount paid for an item. This is a very difficult concept for many children and help at home will be key for students to learn this. An example: If I bought a bag of candy for $2.53 and gave the cashier $5.00, how much change would I get back? Students have not yet learned how to subtract 3 digit numbers with zeros, so this becomes difficult. We are doing it at school, but "counting on" is the concept that they should be learning. Please practice this at home.
We are working on understanding root words, persuasive writing, ongoing reading skills for comprehension, pronouns, punctuation, letter writing and digraphing sentences.
We are studying Civil Rights and learning about Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson. We will be doing some in-class projects for both of these famous people and learning about their positive character traits.
