We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed being with family and loved ones. It won't be long until our Christmas break is here. It's a busy time of year, and, of course, we are busy at school!
Everyone should've received an invitation to our class presentation on December 19th at 8:30 a.m. Please practice the highlighted lines that your child received with this invitation. It is important that they learn them quickly and without hesitation for our rehearsals. We look forward to having you come and everyone is very excited! We will present some holiday facts about countries around the world and also sing for you!
We will be attending a Performing Arts program on Monday, December 3rd at the Cobb Civic Center. The performance is the Nutcracker Ballet. We will have a normal morning, have sack lunches after our specials class (Computer Lab) and then depart at 11:00 a.m. and return in time to pack up and go home. Please have your child dress appropriately for attending this special Christmas event.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
We continue to improve our writing and spelling skills with Writer's Workshop and also our weekly spelling activities, using our weekly spelling words. We have been reading books and making connections; first, the text to ourselves, currently the text to another text and next the text to the world. Our students love to share the connections these stories bring to mind and it helps to improve their reading and thinking skills.
We have about half of our class on the Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame so far!!Please continue to encourage your child to reach this goal and continue to encourage those who already have to continue reading.
MATH:
We have covered a lot of territory in Math in the last several weeks, from regrouping with addition and subtraction, learning how to check our subtraction problems through addition, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, and currently working on Geometry.
We have reviewed plane shapes and solid shapes and learned about vertices, edges, faces and angles. We learned about right, acute and obtuse angles. The students picked this up very quickly and I feel that it should serve them well in the coming years in future math classes. It seems like a complicated concept, but we present it on such a level that second graders grasp it pretty easily.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We have studied about the Plains Indians, and their location and culture, and then moved on to the Pilgrims in time for Thanksgiving. We learned about the settlement of the Pilgrims and how the Native American culture helped the Pilgrims survive, and the reason for our national holiday. We are currently studying about another type of Native Americans, the Eastern Woodland Indians, and their culture.
SCIENCE:
We have been so busy with Social Studies, but now it is time to get back to science! In the next couple weeks, we will learn about Energy - heat, light and motion energy - and just how important the Sun is to our Earth!
**PLEASE BE AWARE!!!
Parents - please be aware that when you allow your child to purchase ice cream at lunch, it is eaten first! It doesn't take long for the children to figure out that when they buy ice cream, it is melted after they finish their lunch. They cannot go back into the lunch line to purchase it as, there is not enough time, and other students are lined up and getting their lunch. I have seen MANY unfinished lunches when students have bought ice cream with their lunch. I am concerned about their diet and the wasted lunch and lunch money. Please keep this in mind when allowing your child to purchase ice cream. It will probably become their lunch!
**ALSO:
It has come to my attention that only about half of our class is turning in nightly homework assignments daily. This habit is formed to make life easier for the children in the coming years. In third grade, students will be punished for not turning in homework and in the future it will effect their grades. Please remind your child each evening to do their assignment AND turn it in the next morning.
