HOPING FOR SNOW!

Dear Parents:

THANK YOU all very much for attending your conference last week.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns as you look through all the information that was sent home at that time.  Remember that you may begin practice tests for the CRCT whenever you are ready, although I feel that it is a little early yet to begin this. Just don't lose your child's login information on the green sheet!

We have another Early Release Day this Wednesday, February 4th.  Students will be dismissed at 12:20 and teachers will be in a Professional Development meeting the rest of the day.  Please remember to send a note if your child's transportation will change that day.

I will be sending home another report on each child's Accelerated Reader points.  Please check this over and make sure that the tests are being passed and the book levels are appropriate for your child's reading skills.  Students need 10 points to have their picture on the Wall of Fame.  Please encourage your child to read AR books as it improves comprehension, vocabulary and self-esteem.  AR books and tests will also increase the SRI test score.

MATH:

We are working on counting back change.  We began with $.50, then $1.00 and are moving on to $5.00.  Students can subtract amounts, but also need to know how to "count on" from the amount spent, up to the $5.00 amount paid for an item.  This is a very difficult concept for many children and help at home will be key for students to learn this. An example:  If I bought a bag of candy for $2.53 and gave the cashier $5.00, how much change would I get back?  Students have not yet learned how to subtract 3 digit numbers with zeros, so this becomes difficult.  We are doing it at school, but "counting on" is the concept that they should be learning.  Please practice this at home.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

We are working on understanding root words, persuasive writing, ongoing reading skills for comprehension, pronouns, punctuation, letter writing and digraphing sentences.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We are studying Civil Rights and learning about Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson.  We will be doing some in-class projects for both of these famous people and learning about their positive character traits.

CLASS UPDATES

MANY THANKS to all parents who attended Open House.  We had a great turnout and I hope everyone has a better idea of what your child will be learning this year.

In Social Studies we are continuing out study on the state of Georgia and for the next two weeks will learn about the Creek and Cherokee Indians and where and how they lived in Georgia.

We made a great topographical map of the state of Georgia and painted all the regions a different color.  Watch for this to come home - the students are very proud of their work.

In Math, we have been working on addition strategies (counting on, doubles, doubles plus one, number lines) and will continue that this week.

Reading groups are in full swing at school, but please remember to read a little at home.  During Open House I passed out an orange September reading log.  If your student returns this at the end of the month, I will give them a certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.  We participate in Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! program every year.  Each month there will be a new reading log sent home.

SPRING IS HERE - SUMMER'S CLOSE BEHIND!

Just a few reminders to bring everyone back to normal after a great Spring break!

Tuesday, (tomorrow) April 15th, we will have an all day field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center.  We will have a lesson on life cycles.  We will have lunch very early and leave school at 10:00 a.m.  The field trip begins at 11:00 a.m. and we should arrive back to Chalker by 2:00, in time to pack up and go home.  Students do not need to bring anything special, but please check the weather and have your child dress appropriately.  We will be outside and walking, so please have them wear tennis shoes and they may need to dress in removeable layers so as the day warms up, they can remove outer layers.  They definately need a jacket and comfortable walking shoes.

Next week, beginning Wednesday, April 23rd, we will be taking the CRCT test.  Please have your child to school on time - if they arrive late, they will be held in the office until testing is over.  Please make sure they have a healthy breakfast and a good nights sleep each day.  The testing is long for children this age and and without being rested or being hungry, it will be difficult for them.  We will test on Weds., Thurs. and Friday.  Makeup tests will be the following week.

**It would be great to have some extra snacks on hand for the testing days.  If you would like to send in some peppermints, granola bars, crackers or other healthy snacks, it would be greatly appreciated!  We will be taking a snack break during test breaks and the students would really appreciate some food for their brains and hard work!

SPIRIT!!!

Spirit day will be Friday, April 25th (the last day of testing!).  Please remind your child to wear Chalker spirit wear or dress in green/yellow.  WE HAVE WON SPIRIT DAY THE LAST TWO MONTHS AND ARE STRIVING TO WIN FOR SECOND GRADE FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!!!!

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!

We are back to learning and the Winter holidays seem far behind.  I hope each of you enjoyed the holidays and spent precious time with your families.

MANY THANKS to all of you for all the wonderful gifts and cards full of encouraging words.  If I forgot to personally thank anyone, please forgive me.  It is a "fight to the finish" each year at the holidays to finish up our celebrations at school and get home to my family where I am wife, mother, daughter and sister.  I appreciate you remembering me with your gifts and cards!

IMPORTANT:

Please remember that next week is conference week (Tues, Weds., Thurs., Fri., and the following Mon.).  STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED EACH DAY AT 12:20.  If there are any transportation changes, please remember to send me a note.  Our lunch time will be from 10:00 - 10:30.

Regarding your conference:  Please make all attempts to be on time.  Conferences have been reduced to once a year and it is only 20 minutes.  This is not much time to discuss a child who is important to both of us.  If by any chance you cannot make your appointed time, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can use my time wisely and not be worried about you!  If you have any questions, please feel free to write them down beforehand in preparation for our conference.

DONATIONS NEEDED:

Lysol Wipes (we have exhausted the last six-pack I bought and illness is picking up!), DESPERATELY in need of glue sticks, paper towels, liquid hand soap and antibacterial lotion.

The Holidays Are Upon Us!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed being with family and loved ones.  It won't be long until our Christmas break is here.  It's a busy time of year, and, of course, we are busy at school!

Everyone should've received an invitation to our class presentation on December 19th at 8:30 a.m.  Please practice the highlighted lines that your child received with this invitation.  It is important that they learn them quickly and without hesitation for our rehearsals.  We look forward to having you come and everyone is very excited!  We will present some holiday facts about countries around the world and also sing for you!

We will be attending a Performing Arts program on Monday, December 3rd at the Cobb Civic Center.  The performance is the Nutcracker Ballet.  We will have a normal morning, have sack lunches after our specials class (Computer Lab) and then depart at 11:00 a.m. and return in time to pack up and go home.  Please have your child dress appropriately for attending this special Christmas event.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

We continue to improve our writing and spelling skills with Writer's Workshop and also our weekly spelling activities, using our weekly spelling words.  We have been reading books and making connections; first, the text to ourselves, currently the text to another text and next the text to the world.  Our students love to share the connections these stories bring to mind and it helps to improve their reading and thinking skills.

We have about half of our class on the Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame so far!!Please continue to encourage your child to reach this goal and continue to encourage those who already have to continue reading.

MATH:

We have covered a lot of territory in Math in the last several weeks, from regrouping with addition and subtraction, learning how to check our subtraction problems through addition, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, and currently working on Geometry.

We have reviewed plane shapes and solid shapes and learned about vertices, edges, faces and angles.  We learned about right, acute and obtuse angles.  The students picked this up very quickly and I feel that it should serve them well in the coming years in future math classes.  It seems like a complicated concept, but we present it on such a level that second graders grasp it pretty easily.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We have studied about the Plains Indians, and their location and culture, and then moved on to the Pilgrims in time for Thanksgiving.  We learned about the settlement of the Pilgrims and how the Native American culture helped the Pilgrims survive, and the reason for our national holiday.  We are currently studying about another type of Native Americans, the Eastern Woodland Indians, and their culture.

SCIENCE:

We have been so busy with Social Studies, but now it is time to get back to science!  In the next couple weeks, we will learn about Energy - heat, light and motion energy - and just how important the Sun is to our Earth!

**PLEASE BE AWARE!!!

Parents - please be aware that when you allow your child to purchase ice cream at lunch, it is eaten first!  It doesn't take long for the children to figure out that when they buy ice cream, it is melted after they finish their lunch.  They cannot go back into the lunch line to purchase it as, there is not enough time, and other students are lined up and getting their lunch.  I have seen MANY unfinished lunches when students have bought ice cream with their lunch.  I am concerned about their diet and the wasted lunch and lunch money.  Please keep this in mind when allowing your child to purchase ice cream.  It will probably become their lunch!

**ALSO:

It has come to my attention that only about half of our class is turning in nightly homework assignments daily.  This habit is formed to make life easier for the children in the coming years.  In third grade, students will be punished for not turning in homework and in the future it will effect their grades.  Please remind your child each evening to do their assignment AND turn it in the next morning.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

Friday, 11/30 - SPIRIT DAY!! Let's win.

Monday, 12/03 - FIELD TRIP.  The Civic Cntr. does not allow chaperones due to

                               space accomodations.

Fall is here!

Report cards go home today, Monday, October 22nd.  Enclosed with the report card is an assessment to explain your child's progress in more detail.  Normally we would be having conferences with this report card and many teachers are missing the Fall conference time - myself included.  Conferences will now only be held in the Spring. I felt compelled to give a little more explanation of how your child is doing by enclosing grade averages, strengths, weaknesses and recommendations.  I hope you find this helpful.  Also enclosed is a report of your child's Accelerated Reader history and points obtained this school year.  For any student, Accelerated Reader is a helpful activity, but it is especially helpful for those who are struggling with reading and/or comprehension difficulties.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your child's progress.

Please email me or ask the front office to leave me a paper message.  I cannot get to the telephone voice mail many days until way after you've left a message.

WHAT WE'RE UP TO:

MATH:

We've been using number lines to better understand addition and subtraction.  We have learned how to add using regrouping and will now be working on subtraction regrouping.  This is the reason that knowing + and - facts is so important - the numbers are getting larger!  Please continue to work on these facts at home so your child's speed will increase.  We have been working on them at school and I have seen some amazing improvements through constant repitition.

SCIENCE:

We are on our 2nd week of studying about the 3 States of Matter - Solids, Liquids and Gases.  We began by looking at all of them and will now do experiments and learn about each state individually.  Later this week, we will be making Oobleck.  What in the world is that?  It's green and goopy.  Is it a solid, a liquid or a gas?  When we are finished your child can teach YOU about it!

LANGUAGE ARTS:

We continue to have individual Guided Reading Groups on a daily basis.  While these groups are working with me, the other students have a story and a reading comprehension activity.  Many students are rushing through their reading activity to move onto something else.  The result for some has been that they must go back and correct wrong information on their papers due to rushing through it.  Please help me inform students that they must take their time during Reading time and read thoroughly and slowly so that they will remember the information contained in each story.

We continue writing on a regular basis and have begun Writer's Workshop.  Most of this writing will not be available to you until the end of the year.  These stories take a long time to write and they follow the writer's procedure of brainstorming, writing, editing and publishing.  They may have to edit several times.  It is exciting and the finished product is worth saving.  The students and I are talking about publishing some of these stories on our blog so that everyone can read some of our work.

Our class has been thrilled with our new computers!  They add such an extended learning and teaching resource to our room that I don't know how we have ever lived without them!  It is a fight to the finish each day to see how many students can have their computer time.  I am amazed with their familiarity with the key board and the web.  I wish I had a computer for at least half our class as there are so many learning resources available.

MANY THANKS TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS (Copy moms, Computer Lab moms, Fall Festival Volunteers, Media Cntr. volunteers and PTA volunteers!)  Our school wouldn't be as great as it is without you!

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT FROM HOME!

September 18, 2007

THANK YOU !

Many THANKS  to all the parents who attended our Open House on September 4th.  We had a GREAT turnout and I appreciate you taking the time to come and listen to the information about our classroom.

Many THANKS to all the donations we have received for our class.  We've received extra snacks, stickers, recess toys, a toy bucket and many other items.  I appreciate your generosity.

Many THANKS to all the volunteers for Room Moms, Computer Lab assistants, Writer's Workshop, Copy Mom, Class Photographer and our Class Directory!! Teacher's love volunteers and appreciate all the help they can get!

Many THANKS for your supervision on your child's daily homework assignments!

Math:

We have studied place value extensively, more than/less than, learned how to regroup in addition and many other math strategies.  We are currently working on counting coins and this is something that can be reinforced at home.

Language Arts:

We have daily Reading groups in our class and when your child is not reading with the teacher, they are working on a short story and reading comprehension activity.  All students work at their own pace and are learning how to do this.

We are also working on the writing process and will soon begin Writer's Workshop.

We have a class full of very good spellers and our spelling tests have been phenomenal!  Please continue to work on spelling each week to keep us at this high level of learning.

Social Studies:

We have learned about types of communities, community helpers and are now learning map skills at a local level.  We will proceed to map skills at a global level next week.  You will notice that most of our weekly poems pertain to our current social studies lessons and you should study these each night.  Our students love reciting the poem to the class each Friday!

IMPORTANT DATES:

Wednesday, 9/19 - EARLY RELEASE DAY -Students are released at 12:30

Stevi B's Pizza Night - Barrett Parkway

Friday, 9/28          - SPIRIT DAY!  Please remember that students should wear

"Chalker Wear" or mostly green and yellow.  We would love

to win Spirit Day for 2nd Grade!

**BEWARE:

Many students are bringing drinks and bottled water and this is fine.  However, we have had a problem with spilled drinks ruining precious work samples, many trips to the restrooms and confusion over which drink belongs to whom.  Water/drinks are allowed several times during the day, but will not be kept on desks or near our mailboxes.  I appreciate your support on this!

DONATIONS NEEDED:

Extra snacks, outdoor toys, Lysol wipes to keep germs away...

PROGRESS REPORTS:

Reports will be sent home on Friday, 9/21, with students who have concerns regarding below-level work and behavior concerns.  Please remember that I am very willing to schedule a conference with anyone who has concerns about their child's progress in our class.  Feel free to call and speak with me, leave me a message or email me.

MANY THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!  Enjoy the beautiful early Fall weather and your super 2nd grader!
