Here are some suggestions as to what you can do at home to help your child:

  • Have your child count the change that you have in your pocket.
  • Look in the paper or a magazine and have your child find coupons.  Have them pretend that they are going to buy the item and that is how much it costs.  Have them count out that amount to you.
  • Put some change on the table and ask your child to make a certain amount (for example: 50¢, 46¢, or 65¢) in as many ways as they can.
  • Have your child tell you what time it is.  Be sure that it is only on the hour or the half hour.
  • Review the day with your child by making a list of the events of a day in order that they occurred.
  • Choose a subject that your child can collect data on in your family.  For example how many pairs of shoes each family member has.  Using tally marks they can collect the data, make a bar graph to show the information.  It will be fun to see who has the most shoes in your family.

·         When you are getting ready to eat a sandwich or anything that can be cut into halves and fourths have your child show you how to cut it into halves and fourths.

Here is a game that you can play with your child to help them work on counting money.

Materials:  4 quarters, 6 dimes, 8 nickels, and 10 pennies

Have your child pretend that he/she is a banker.

Give the banker some of the above coins and you keep the rest.

Pretend that you are making a deposit into the bank and have your child count the amount.

Then pretend that you are making a withdrawal and tell your child the amount (for example 38¢) and have your child decide what coins to use and have them count that amount back to you.

Repeat this several times.

Sincerely,

Miss Bennett
